What Premium adds
OpenAI added Premium seats to ChatGPT Business, the plan called ChatGPT Team until August 2025, on 24 August 2026. According to OpenAI, Premium seats include “5x more usage than Standard seats, no five-hour usage limit, and predictable weekly usage resets.” Both seat types can sit in one workspace, and only workspace owners can buy, reduce, assign or change them.
| Seat | Billed annually | Billed monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Business Standard | $20 | $25 |
| Business Premium | $100 | $125 |
| Extra for each Premium seat | $80 | $100 |

When Premium pays off
Because price and allowance both scale by five, the question isn’t whether Premium is good value per message. It’s whether this person needs the room.
- Worth it: someone who runs out of their Standard allowance most weeks and would otherwise stop, or draw on workspace credits.
- Not worth it: someone who sends a handful of messages a day. They pay for an allowance they never reach.
- Compare first: someone with occasional busy weeks. When a seat’s included usage runs out, eligible activity can draw on the workspace credit pool if flexible pricing is on and your spend controls allow it. A Standard seat with a monthly credit limit may cover a busy month for less than a Premium seat for the whole term.
There is no exact break-even point. OpenAI says Premium’s included usage has no single credit or dollar equivalent, because consumption depends on the model and the task. Watch what people actually use instead.
Timing matters as well. Added seats are prorated and charged immediately, but seat reductions only take effect at the start of the next billing cycle, and unused seats aren’t refunded once the cycle’s seat count is committed.
What the admin console shows, and what it doesn’t
Since 16 April 2026, Workspace analytics in ChatGPT Business includes a member-level usage table.
Shows
- Seat type, credits spent and messages sent for each member
- Windows of 7 days, 1 month, 6 months, 12 months or a custom range, with search by member
- Monthly credit limits per seat type, with per-user overrides (none are set by default)
Doesn’t show
- How much of their included allowance each member used
- Whether a Premium member would have fit in a Standard seat
- Use inside the allowance in credit terms: zero credits spent doesn’t mean zero use
That last point comes from OpenAI itself: seats use their included allowance before drawing on credits, so a Premium member with no credit spend can be a heavy user or a very light one. Messages sent is the better signal.
How to check it by hand
- Open Workspace analytics, choose the last month and go to the member table.
- Look at the Premium rows and their messages sent. The lowest are your first Standard candidates; ask them whether they hit a limit last month.
- Now look at the Standard rows and their credits spent. Standard members who spend credits month after month have run past their included allowance. They’re the people Premium was made for.
- Swap seats between the two groups. Assigning, reassigning or swapping seats you’ve already paid for adds no charge.
- If Premium seats are left over, schedule a seat reduction. It takes effect at the start of the next billing cycle.
How SeatLeak automates it
SeatLeak reads the member table (seat type, messages and credits) and adds per-person usage from a browser extension your admin pushes once. It never reads prompts or content. Each Premium member’s weekly use is compared with what a Standard seat allows; anyone who stays under it for a month shows up with the saving, −$80 a month on annual billing, and the date it lands. Standard members who keep drawing credits show up as upgrade candidates, so Premium seats go where they pay.
SeatLeak opens to teams in the order they sign up, starting this winter. Until then, the calculator on our home page estimates what your team is likely leaking across all its tools.
